Ashton Kutcher, a popular American Actor and a Venture Capitalist, presented a non-traditional gift to TV host ‘Ellen DeGeneres’ as a late birthday present. Ashton teamed up with San Francisco based cryptocurrency firm Ripple to surprise daytime talk show host by donating $4 million in XRP for her ‘Wildlife Fund’. Kutcher and ‘Guy Oseary’ who are the founders of VC firm ‘Sound Ventures’, made the donation on Ripple’s behalf during one of the episode’s of the show.
While on the show, Kutcher said that, “We can actually transfer [the donation] into Rwandan francs right now, right here, and all we have to do is push this button and it’s in your account.”
Ellen Degeneres has spoken about Bitcoin on her show in the past. She tried to explain Bitcoin to her viewers by comparing it with a goat that doesn’t exist except for on the Internet. She said, “Nobody Knows how it works. Nobody. Everybody’s talking about Bitcoin and nobody understands it. It’s like a plot twist in a confusing movie.”
Kutcher has been active in Tech investing in recent years through his firm ‘Sound Ventures.’ Sound Ventures is the successor of his previous firm A-Grade Investments. The duo ‘Kutcher and Oseary’ have invested in high-profile companies such as Bitpay, Uber, Airbnb and Spotify.
Ripple (XRP), the third-largest cryptocurrency by market cap after Bitcoin and Ethereum, allows users to efficiently send money globally using the blockchain. Following the show XRP was 2 percent up within 24 hour period.
Kutcher has been strong believer of Blockchain and has invested heavily in cryptocurrencies. At a TechCrunch conference several years ago, Kutcher spoke enthusiastically about the ‘decentralized technology.’ At that time he mentioned, “The notion that we could civically monitor each other in an anonymous way actually keeps the anonymity of the Internet. We don’t have to worry about Big Brother.” He also mentioned that, “And that same infrastructure that built out Bitcoin could be used in the security industry for mass good.”
